I remember studying the Stamford Prison Experiment nearly 15 years ago. It was shocking then. Now 40 years on the reflections are really just as interesting.

Proper introductions aren’t exactly a simple matter:

The younger person is always presented to the older or more distinguished, but a gentleman is always presented to a lady, even though he is an old gentleman of great distinction and the lady a mere slip of a girl […] No lady is ever, except to the President of the United States, a cardinal, or a reigning sovereign, presented to a man.

Also:

Do not say: “Mr. Jones, shake hands with Mr. Smith,” or “Mrs. Jones, I want to make you acquainted with Mrs. Smith.” Never say: “make you acquainted with” and do not, in introducing one person to another, call one of them “my friend.” You can say “my aunt,” or “my sister,” or “my cousin” — but to pick out a particular person as “my friend” is not only bad style but, unless you have only one friend, bad manners — as it implies Mrs. Smith is “my friend” and you are a stranger.

One has to be wary of inflection, and things get even more complicated when you have to actually shake hands.

My faith, while a small part of this blog is a larger part of my life. I saw this on a Catholic blog, whose podcast is a staple in my diet. Ironically this video is of a song I sang all through my Uniting Church intense youth. It gave me nice memories, and a good reminder.

I think this is good. I just hope this also means that pedestrians and cyclist get training in road rules and “shared zones” too especially after this .

GTD Times have some great advice as to how to save oneself from incidental reading overload especially  for knowledge workers. I wish I knew this sooner.

This is a photo of this evening’s labour. My first attempt at baking in this kitchen, with this oven since the move but more importantly for me it’s shortbread complete with my grandmother’s pricking technique.

It may not have been so evenly spread but for a first batch in several years it smells amazing.

i used twitter yesterday much like I think it was intended, or at least a very handy way of using it to broadcast a problem PB was having with Vodafone (the Australian phone company) and his iPhone. It wasn’t solved through the tweeting but the up to the minute information was shared and further broadcasted. It is strange but I feel a strange coming of age feeling -using the web for up to the minute goodness in Australia.

this brief piece is based on a writing exercise based on getting a “Dear John” letter from my favourite piece of furniture. On the website it came from various writers penned letters from sofas and armchairs, scales, toilets and even an electric wheelchair.

Here’s my very drafty initial attempt

Well I’ve had enough. So I’m going. I could play sad music now, but I really don’t need to. I’m almost certain you’ll just go out and replace me, or more likely just beg borrow and steal which just goes to show how little I mean to you. So because I’m angry, I’m going to try and convince TiM to come with me. That will at least leave you time to consider why I left.

You really should have cleaned up after yourself. I’m sticky here and just generally grubby. Its called don’t eat near me. It just holds you up in the long run.

But my brain damage is the main reason I’m leaving. How dare you drop me! That just hurt. I know you can’t help it all the time but it hurts to be dropped. So I’m leaving.
